Chaldean letter values, and why there is no 9

The classical table gives every letter a value from 1 to 8. The 9 is held apart, the alphabet totals 103, and the table is shown beside the Pythagorean one.

Why no 9

The tradition holds 9 as the number of completion and assigns it to no letter, while accepting 9 as a name total with its own reading. A name can reduce to 9; no letter is worth 9.

Chaldean against Pythagorean

This part is worked out by the calculators: open the calculator. The Pythagorean table runs 1 to 9 by alphabetical position and totals 126. The two are never blended.

W is 6

A published table elsewhere shows W as 5 in one row; the classical table is unambiguous and every calculation here uses 6.
